If you are already board certified in Clinical Informatics through the American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM), you keep your certificate through ABPM's Continuing Certification Program (CCP). The centerpiece is the Longitudinal Assessment Program (LAP): a set of questions you answer each year from home, with your references open, instead of sitting a high-stakes recertification exam.
Here is how it works as of 2026. Rules are still evolving during the pilot, so confirm details on the ABPM LAP page.
The LAP in brief
| Feature | Current rule |
|---|---|
| Questions per year | 30 per certificate you hold |
| Where | Online, on ABPM's Learnswell platform |
| Resources allowed | Yes, including textbooks and AI tools |
| Time limit | Each question times out after 60 minutes |
| Standard during the pilot | Answer all 30 and perform better than chance |
| CME credit for LAP | None during the pilot |
| Pilot period | January 1, 2025 to December 31, 2029 |

How the pilot is scored
During the extended pilot there is no passing score in the traditional sense. ABPM asks for good-faith participation: answer all 30 questions in the year and score better than chance. Missing two consecutive years of good-faith participation can lead to suspension of your certificate, so do not let a busy year slide.
ABPM has said the final version of the program launches in 2030. Expect the standard to tighten when the pilot ends.
What the questions cover
LAP questions follow the same five domains as the initial certification exam: Fundamentals, Improving Care Delivery and Outcomes, Enterprise Information Systems, Data Governance and Data Analytics, and Leadership and Professionalism. Each year ABPM publishes the specific outline topics the LAP will draw from on its Clinical Informatics LAP page.
For 2026 the listed topics include systems architecture, security and privacy practices, workflow analysis, key performance indicators, care coordination, health information exchange, machine learning, data visualization, and teaching modalities. Our content outline guide explains each domain in more depth.
The other CCP requirements
The LAP is one part of continuing certification. ABPM's CCP page also lists:
- CME: 20 AMA PRA Category 1 credits, with at least 6 related to your ABPM certification.
- Annual attestation: due December 31 each year (December 31, 2026 for the current year).
- Annual fee: for 2026, $150 per certificate if paid January 1 to March 31, rising to $200 if paid July 1 to December 31, with a $150 late fee after December 31.
How to stay ready for LAP questions
Open-resource does not mean effortless. Thirty questions spread over a year are easy to answer well if the field is fresh in your mind, and slow if you have to research every one.
- Keep up with regulation. Informatics rules change quickly: interoperability and information blocking rules, decision support transparency requirements, prior authorization APIs, and AI governance guidance all shifted in the last few years.
- Answer a few questions a month rather than all 30 in December. It keeps the time per question low and fits how longitudinal assessment is meant to work.
- Refresh your weaker domains. Most diplomates work deeply in one or two areas. A short practice set across all five domains each quarter shows you what has gone stale.
Practice that keeps you current
CliniQuiz's ABPM Clinical Informatics question bank is updated for current regulation and covers all five domains, with an explanation for every option. It works well as a quarterly refresher before LAP questions, and you can try five questions free without an account.
